On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court scorned the will of the people, over-stepped the confines of the judicial branch, and handed down a decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. This decision has catastrophic implications for America and her citizens.
Nearly 250 years ago, our founding fathers labored tirelessly to give us a Constitution that would guard against the chains of tyranny that so many sacrificed their lives to break. Thus, a separation of powers and a representative government was instituted. However, our government leaders no longer respect the Constitution as the law of the land and our voice has been silenced. Don’t believe me? Take a look at these statistics from a handout I received at church following the June 26th decision.
- In the years leading up to the landmark SCOTUS case, voters in 31 states had acted through the democratic process to uphold marriage and the family. Yet, same-sex marriage was legalized in 36 states, due in large part to overreaching judges who chose to disregard the will of the people.
- Just over 3.3 million individuals voted for same-sex marriage in three states (Maine, Maryland and Washington State), while over 41 million voted for marriage protection amendments or bans on same-sex marriage in 31 states – a ratio of more than 12:1.
While media reports propaganda seems to indicate that the country supports same-sex marriage, the facts demonstrate that the people of the United States of America have made their voices heard in defense of traditional marriage. Yet, we have come to a point in history where our government no longer derives it’s power from the “consent of the governed”. Our nation is now a Constitutional Republic in name only, while in reality we are ruled by the whims of judges, governors and presidents who circumvent the balance of powers and sidestep the constitution to create laws as they please.
While these facts alone should be enough for any secularist or Libertarian to be outraged by the OBERGEFELL v. HODGES decision, for the Biblically-minded Christian or Jew, there is something much more ominous at stake – the judgment of God.
The United States of America was established as a Christian nation, dedicated to the purposes of God. Unfortunately, due to revisionist history, we have generations of Americans who are ignorant of this fact. (For more info, please see The Faith Of Our Founders.) For the past 50+ years, however, we have been systematically throwing God out of every aspect of public and private life. Along the way, our nation’s leaders have made countless decisions to turn their backs on God. A few stand out because of the immediate judgment that proceeded.
1924 – Following 13 years of a eugenics-based movement to reform immigration in The United States, The Immigration Restriction Act was passed in order to keep European Jews and other people groups who were viewed as inferior out of the country. The Great Depression followed 5 years later.
1960’s – Prayer and Bible Reading were banned from public schools by two Supreme Court Decisions, Engel v. Vitale (1962) and Abington School District v. Schempp (1963). The teaching of Darwinism in public schools gained widespread acceptance in the ’60’s, with SCOTUS ruling on Epperson v. Arkansas in 1968 that state laws prohibiting the teaching of evolution violated the First Amendment. Subsequently, 1960’s America knew far too much sorrow with the assassinations of President John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, along with the domestic turmoil and severe loss of life caused by the Vietnam War.
1970’s – On January 22, 1973, the Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton decisions legalized abortion at any point during pregnancy, all the way up to moments before birth, and for any reason nationwide. During the same month, a stock market crash began, which would last through December 1974. In October 1973, the oil crisis began, resulting in the quadrupling of oil prices, oil rationing, year-round daylight savings time, and other severe economic repercussions by the end of the embargo in March 1974. The 1970’s also experienced a severe recession, the effects of which were felt through the middle of Ronald Reagan’s first term, as well as the resignation of President Richard Nixon due to the Watergate scandal. These tumultuous times were the direct result of the national legalization of the shedding of innocent blood.
1990’s – President’s George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton each pushed peace for land treaties between Israel and the so-called Palestinians (Who Are The Palestinians?), which would force Israel to surrender land in exchange for an end to terrorism. Every step of the way, our presidents’ attempts at cursing Israel and dividing her land resulted in storms (including a reverse pattern storm that sent 35 foot waves into the Kennebunkport home of President Bush), hurricanes, an earthquake, a tornado, a market crash and scandals. (Ten major U.S. disasters on dates significant to treatment of Israel -Truth!)
2000’s – 9/11 was the most significant event of this decade and many Bible teachers believe that it was God’s warning judgment on our nation as a result of rampant defiance of God’s laws and as a plea to return to Him. In 2005, President George W. Bush pushed Israel to move their people out of the West Bank. While the Israelis were being removed from their homes, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, leaving devastation, homelessness and death in it’s wake.
It is my belief that a nation that has been dedicated to God and established for His purposes will face God’s judgment much more quickly than a nation that has never known Him (Ezekiel 18:24-26). Frankly, I am amazed by God’s great patience with us, considering our many abominations and utter rejection of God from our lives, families and country. In addition to the same-sex marriage decision, SCOTUS struck down a law that allowed American citizens who were born in Jerusalem to list Israel as their country of birth and President Obama’s recent deal with Iran allows the country whose favorite chant is “Death to America, Death to Israel!” to continue their quest to develop a nuclear weapon in order to “wipe Israel off the map.” The abominations of The USA, once a golden cup in the hand of God, have been piling up before His throne and judgment is sure to come.
Benjamin Franklin rightly declared that, “God governs in the affairs of men.” Even if you do not accept that America was founded on Christianity and consecrated to God, the Bible demonstrates that He is far from silent concerning the wickedness of kings (government leaders) and nations.
12 Then the word of the LORD came to me saying, 13 “Son of man, if a country sins against Me by committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, destroy its supply of bread, send famine against it and cut off from it both man and beast,14 even though these three men, Noah, Daniel and Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver themselves,” declares the Lord GOD. – Ezekiel 14:12-14 (NASB)
Contrary to the teachings of some Christian leaders today, God is not uniquely concerned with Israel’s behavior to the exclusion of all other nations. There are many examples of pagan nations that were warned of and suffered through God’s judgment. Nineveh, the capital of Assyria and Israel’s notorious enemy, is one such example. God told Jonah, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” After Jonah refused to go and literally ran the other way, God used some coercion (to put it mildly) to get His warning to that city. Amazingly, the citizens of Nineveh, who did not serve (or know) God, heeded the warning, repented and turned from their evil ways. God saw this and relented. Similarly, God judged Babylon, the nation of Assyria, Sodom and Gomorrah and many other nations. So, too, will America be judged if we do not repent and return to Him. We the people have largely turned from God and gone after our own ways, doing whatever is right in our own eyes. We have normalized the murder of our children through abortion and abortifacient birth control methods, turned our backs on Israel and dishonored the first God-ordained institution of marriage through no-fault divorce laws that legitimized adultery and now through the legalization of same-sex marriage. Inside and outside of the church our nation is filled with prideful, covetous, gossiping and dishonest people who give God lip-service while rejecting His true Lordship in their lives. The body and bride of Jesus Christ looks down on the sin and brokenness in the world while neglecting to love our neighbors (and friends and family and Facebook connections) enough to tell them of the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus paid for that sin and brokenness and the consequences of not accepting it.
Judgment is certainly coming, but we must remember that God is not a mean, angry tyrant in the Heavens who just wants to interfere in our lives and spoil our good times, but rather a loving Father who grieves because of our sin and rejection of His Son.
Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’ (Ezekiel 33:11, NKJV)
God’s judgment never befalls a nation or an individual unless they have first been warned and given ample opportunity to repent and return. That is why God sent the prophet, John, ahead of Jesus to declare, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that God is, “… longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” And, John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
The warning has been here for a long time, but the question is, how many will heed it? Will we as a nation return to God or will it take His judgment to wake us up? Will you, individually, repent and accept the free gift He offers you today? And, will those of us who have already accepted His sacrifice examine our hearts and fall on our knees in repentance of our own sin and the sin of our nation and stop playing church and basking in our own self-righteousness before it’s too late?
