Return

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The dust has settled and Election 2012 leaves America with another four years of Barack Obama, the most Constitutionally and, in David Barton’s words, Biblically hostile president in the history of our nation.

Many of us had hope going into this election that the country would come to her collective senses and elect Mitt Romney, a proven businessman and fiscal conservative, to repair the mess in which we currently find ourselves. Though there were questions in the minds of many concerning Romney’s change of heart on social issues, there were many, myself included, who chose to take him at his word and hope for the best in order to relieve President Obama of his post. Unfortunately, that did not happen. So, where do we go from here? Well, that depends on your world view. For Christians, the answer lies in the pages of the Old Testament. The book of Judges record the fickleness of the Jewish people in their loyalty to God. Judges 2:7 tells us that “… the Israelites served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him – those who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.”However, three verses later, we are told, “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. And they angered the Lord.”

God proceeded to not only turn Israel over to her enemies, but scripture tells us that God, himself, fought against Israel, causing Israel’s defeat time and again. But, God, being both just and merciful, would raise up righteous judges to lead the people and rescue them from their enemies. Whenever Israel had a righteous judge in place, the Lord would be with that judge throughout his or her lifetime and Israel would enjoy peace.

As is the case in America, though, God’s people were stubborn. They repeated this cycle over and over again. They turned their back on God, followed after their own ways, were delivered into the hands of their enemies, rescued by God, and given a time of peace and the chance to return to God. Every time, however, God’s people rejected Him and followed after their own ways and were delivered into the hands of their enemies. This cycle continued throughout the times of the judges.

This is what I see in America and it is what our founders warned us of. Almost every one of them, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Rush, John Jay, and many others warned that if we strayed from the principles upon which this nation was founded – i.e. Biblical values and morality – we would self-destruct. They insisted that private morality, which stemmed from religion (and make no mistake, the religion they were referring to was Christianity) was the foundation for liberty.

In the 2012 election, the most startling indication of the religious temperature of The United States was the constitution-bible-200x300re-election of Barack Obama. However, there were other indicators as well. In various states, marijuana, same-sex marriage and public funding for abortion were all approved by the electorate on Tuesday night, demonstrating that this nation, in which 78% of the population are professing Christians, has rejected God and followed after our own ways. And now, there is a debate brewing over whether the Republican Party should stifle social conservatives in order to win elections. This would be a tremendous mistake for Republicans and, I believe, would spell the end of the Republican Party. History proved this when the Whig Party split over the issue of slavery in the nineteenth century and the Republican Party was formed by anti-slavery Whigs, including none other than Abraham Lincoln. The battle of social vs. fiscal conservativism destroyed the Whigs, and if the Republican Party – the only one of the two primary political parties in The United States whose platform has continuously taken a stand for Biblical morality – rejects social conservativism, then the Republican Party will go the way of the Whigs.

This may all turn out to be irrelevant, however, if God’s people do not return to Him in time to fight for the soul of this country. We’ve all heard this scripture so many times that perhaps your eyes glaze over upon reading it. Nevertheless, it is what we need to hear and what we need to do right now in order to have any hope of rescuing this great nation from the brink of self-destruction.

“If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14, Amplified Bible)

There are reports right now of nuclear-powered Russian submarines patrolling our shores, Iranian jets firing on an unarmed U.S. drone in the Persian Gulf, Chinese development of stolen American military technology. Israel faces the necessity of striking Iranian nuclear facilities before Iran has a nuclear weapon, with the almost certain possibility of no help from the United States of America under the leadership of Barack Obama. It appears that we are getting increasingly close to the fulfillment of the prophecy in Ezekiel 38, in which a Russian-Iranian led coalition of nations will attempt a large-scale attack on Israel. I believe that it is very possible that America will fall under attack at the same time. Israel is promised God’s supernatural deliverance from this attack. America is not.

Regardless of whether the fulfillment of this prophecy and others is imminent or not, it is crucial that Americans fall on our faces before God, repent of our sins, return to Him and pray for God to heal our land. I believe that it is clear in scripture that this is what will determine not only the survival of America, but how we are used as a nation during the days to come. Will we be used as a force for good or evil? Will we even survive? It is up to us. Return to God, America, or face the consequences. Study the founding of our country and the Bible. Spend your time meditating on God’s word and learning history. Find out what made this country great for more than two centuries. We must return to our roots and we must return to our God. It is time for Christians stop living like the spoiled, apathetic people we have become and to start behaving like those gave everything so that we could be free.
