Of Course It’s Because She’s Running For President – Why Benghazi Matters

Reading Time: 6 minutes

“They set up this select committee with no rules, no deadline, and an unlimited budget. And they set them loose, madam secretary, because you’re running for president,” stated Maryland Representative Elijah Cumming in an accusation lobbed against Chairman Trey Gowdy and the other 6 Republicans on the Benghazi Committee.

While the rest of his comments reeked of the kind of partisan spin that many Democrats and media outlets have pinned on Republicans, I want to focus, for a few moments, on the phrase, “…because you’re running for president.” Phrases like these are often uttered as a defense against a presidential candidate’s sordid past as their actions are aptly spun in order to make them appear to be an innocent victim of mud-slinging and/or partisan politics, while simultaneously erasing the actions of a person who is contending for the highest office in the land from the minds of most Americans. And, as they have shown us time and again, no one is better at this game than the Clintons. National Review’s David French puts it this way,

Let’s translate this into plain English: The hearing was a “bust” because Hillary rationalized away her abject failures and multiple lies with poise and panache. Libya is a failed state? The State Department ignored warning after warning, and failed to protect its people at our embassy? There was no adequate American response despite an hours-long firefight in Benghazi? The administration lied to the American people for day after day after day about the cause of the attack? No matter. Look at how mean the Republicans are! Gaze in wonder at Hillary’s stamina. End the hearings and #FreeHillary! No one, however, should be surprised that Hillary was able to dazzle the Left. While she’s not as charismatic as her husband, she does share his greatest political gift — the ability to persuade millions of Americans to not just accept but defend truly reprehensible, indefensible conduct. Consider Bill Clinton. After months of public combat with Kenneth Starr and House Republicans, the public was ready to “move on” from revelations that Clinton not only engaged in a tawdry affair in the Oval Office but also lied under oath — all the while committing acts of mass-scale character assassination against the people who doggedly pursued the truth. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/426004/hillary-clinton-benghazi-hearing

While the Benghazi investigation would have rightly proceeded regardless of Hillary Clinton’s political aspirations, why, in 2015 America, do we view investigating the character and actions of a presidential candidate as a negative? Why is “because you are running for president” viewed as an unjust motivation for examining a person’s character and actions? Our nation’s founders did not believe that it was. Consider the following statements (emphasis added).

“He who is void of virtuous attachments in private life is, or very soon will be, void of all regard of his country. There is seldom an instance of a man guilty of betraying his country who had not before lost the feeling of moral obligations in his private connections…Private and public vices are in reality…connected…Nothing is more essential to the establishment of manners in a State than that all persons employed in places of power and trust be men of unexceptionable characters. The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.” ~ Samuel Adams

“If a republican government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws.” ~ Noah Webster

“And that this happy state of things may continue, look well to the characters and qualifications of those you elect and raise to office and places of trust. … Choose ye out from among you able men, such as fear God, men of truth and hating covetousness and set them to rule over you. Think not that your interests will be safe in the hands of the weak and ignorant or faithfully managed by the impious, the dissolute and the immoral.” ~ Reverend Matthias Burnet, Revolutionary Era Preacher

Before the days of radio and television, the American people had to investigate in order to know who a candidate was, what they stood for and what their private character was like if they didn’t want to vote blindly. Today, we are perpetually charmed by the “impious, the dissolute and the immoral” who are so skilled in Narcissistic manipulation that they are able to convince us of their innocence with their right hand on the Bible and their left hand holding the still-smoking gun.

This is why Benghazi matters and why the citizens of this country must not allow our politicians and government officials to commit such atrocities with impunity. It is far past time that we the people stood up and let our politicians know that their character does matter, that what they do when they think no one is watching reveals exactly what they will do when entrusted with the power that comes with any political office, and that we will no longer elect men and women of degenerate character to govern our nation. The private and public character of Hillary Clinton has long been questionable at best and Benghazi was no exception. Contrary to the main-stream media’s claims that Clinton “won” the Benghazi hearings, there were many troubling revelations made, including an email to her daughter and a phone call to the Egyptian Prime Minister. Here are some of the things we now know.

  • Prior to Hillary Clinton’s official statement on the night of September 11th (10:08 pm, EST) in which she placed blame for the “violence” on a YouTube video, both an email from the State Department to the White House (6:07 pm, EST) and a telephone call from Hillary Clinton to the Libyan President (8:00 pm, EST) acknowledged that an al Qaeda affiliate (Ansar al Sharia) was responsible for the attack.
  • Around an hour after her statement, Clinton emailed her daughter, Chelsea, acknowledging once again that the attack was carried out by “an Al Qaeda-like group”.
  • The next day, Hillary Clinton made a speech at the State Department, reiterating her earlier statement which blamed the YouTube video. Yet, she spoke with the Muslim-Brotherhood Prime Minister of Egypt, Hesham Kandil, the same day, telling him, “We know that the attack in Libya had nothing to do with the film. It was a planned attack – not a protest.”
  • Hillary Clinton had a private email server set up in her apartment, which she kept a secret for years. While Ambassador Stevens was not given this email address, Clinton did engage in hundreds of emails with Sidney Blumenthal, who had previously worked for her husband during his administration and who assisted in smear campaigns against Monica Lewinsky, Kenneth Star and even Barack Obama during Hillary’s 2008 campaign. Secretary Clinton went around Obama, who had denied Blumenthal a position with the State Department, and secretly hired him at a rate of $10,000/month. Furthermore, it has been revealed that Sidney Blumenthal had a financial stake in what happened in Libya.
  • Before the 9/11 attack, hundreds of emails requesting more security for the Libyan Embassy were ignored by Hillary Clinton and the State Department. She claims to have never received these emails, which seems implausible to any thinking person.
  • Rather than uttering the words, “Islamic Terrorism”, Hillary Clinton, along with President Obama, blamed a video produced by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian Coptic Christian. Nakoula was subsequently arrested on September 27th on “unrelated” charges and spent approximately one year in prison, while not one terrorist involved in the murder of Americans and large-scale terrorist attack on our Libyan Embassy was ever brought to justice.

Hillary Clinton’s actions leading to and proceeding the terrorist attack in Libya are indicative of a woman who will do and say anything to further her own agenda and protect her selfish political aspirations, up to and including allowing the deaths of American citizens, including an Ambassador who, according to her own admission, was a “good friend”, and lying repeatedly to the American people and the victims’ families. This is an issue that should garner bi-partisan investigation and concern, especially when it involves someone who is running for President of the United States. Yet, the Democrats are not the only ones who have slandered Trey Gowdy’s Select Committee, as even some Establishment Republicans have mocked his efforts.

So, I ask, when did we come to a place in this country where the character of our leaders does not matter? Why do so many Americans believe that people who are willing to lie, cheat, slander, and worse deserve our trust? Why is the economy and our own prosperity esteemed higher than the moral qualifications of those running for the highest office in our land? And, why are we too busy to be bothered by questions such as these, but instead believe that speeches and statements crafted by the most skilled PR teams money can buy reflect the true sentiments of candidates seeking political office?

Let us, today, discard the apathy that has driven the United States of America dangerously close to an early grave, stop ignoring the behavior of those employed by our votes and heed the instructions of Samuel Adams, who warned us to be excessively curious “concerning the characters” of those with whom we have entrusted our freedom. Of course it is because she is running for president, and we must demand nothing less.

  • Confirmation bias. It’s the act of filing in all blanks, mysteries, and even the tiniest doubts with what one wants – and already has decided – to be true. Nonbelievers are experts when it comes to fooling themselves. Politicians are experts at fooling even the elect, if that were possible. It’s amazing how unbelievable a claim can be while loads of people seem to believe it. They believe it because they want to. They believe it religiously, especially the ones that claim to not have any religion. They worship Hillary, to fill the void that only Jesus can. Sooner or later they will get their “progress” because believers focus our efforts on worshiping The One who made us. Not the newest presidential candidate. They’ll will, they’ll get what they want soon enough.
