Donald Trump’s 2016 victory inspired Dennis Hof to throw his hat in the political ring and it is paying off for the Nevada brothel owner and self-described pimp. Hof defeated incumbent James Oscarson and newcomer Joseph Bradley in the June 12th primary and is favored to win the general election against Democratic candidate, Lesia Romanov. Many of Nevada’s Evangelical Christians are quite pleased with Hof’s candidacy, especially Pastor Victor Fuentes. In an interview with Reuters, Fuentes indicated that his support for the millionaire pimp lies in his belief that Hof is not like other politicians who, “might speak good words, not sleepwith prostitutes, be a good neighbor. But by their decisions, they have evil in their heart.”
Reuters also interviewed Robert and Debbie Thomas, who explained that they voted for Hof even though Robert said the brothels “bother” him “a lot” and Debbie admitted to signing a petition that would allow voters in their county to decide whether brothels should be outlawed.
At least one pastor differed with his colleague’s perspective. Paul Goulet, Senior Pastor of International Church of Las Vegas told Reuters in a telephone interview, “For me, it goes back to faith and values. Hof has a profession making money out of young women who sell their bodies for sexual favors. It’s demeaning to women. I can’t wrap my brain around supporting someone who does that.”
It seems not too many agree with Goulet, as Hof won nearly 43% of the Republican votes in Nevada State Assembly District 36.
BEYOND THE HEADLINE
The Bible is clear that God commands us to choose moral and reputable leaders for ourselves and our founders believed that the character of elected officials was the key to sustaining (or unraveling) America’s liberty. While the Democratic party has long embraced immoral candidates, 2016 was the beginning of such compromise for the Republican party. Many tout the accomplishments of President Trump as well as his fulfilling many of his campaign promises (some good, some not so good – more on that another day) as evidence that political and business savy is more important than good morals. Hof’s supporters echo these sentiments as they try to explain how they can vote for a millionair brothel owner while at the same time trying to shut down brothels in their state. Christian writer, speaker and radio host, Carmen LaBerge took to Twitter with this wise assessment…
If you set aside Truth-based morality and True religion what you’re almost certainly NOT getting is honest anything.
As American followers of Christ, the Bible should be our guide in every matter and the Constitution and other founding documents should be a close second. Galatians 6:7-8 (WEB) tells us…
Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
God’s Word teaches us that a person will always reap what they sow. A man cannot sow pride, sensuality and blatent immorality and reap good in any area of his life, including and perhaps especially the political arena. With 73% of Americans professing Christianity, it is time that we turn to the Bible for wisdom in politics and electing a pimp to public office is certainly not the way to do that.
